VeloScience Vintage Rally to benefit Columbus Humane

While VeloScience Bike Works is all about using the newest innovations and technology to enhance your cycling experience, we do still have a soft place in our hearts for the bikes of our youth that helped us find our love of cycling.  We love to occasionally break out the old steel rig and wool jersey and throw down on a club ride!  That's what this ride is about - reconnecting with the machines - and adventures - that made us fall in love with this beautiful sport!

Come join us for the coolest group ride you'll do all year!  Ride the oldest bike you own (or can borrow!), wear the gear that reflects a lost era, and celebrate the heritage of cycling.  We'll roll from VeloScience together at 9:00 am on Sunday, April 28, 2024 for a relaxed, conversational cruise over a flat to gently rolling 40-mile course.  Behind us a 1953 Chevrolet pickup will perform SAG duties.  The GPS route won't be published, because heck, you didn't need that in the good old days, right?  Old fashioned queue sheets will be available for those who fear getting lost.  We'll stop for espresso and pastries midway (electrolytes...what?), and there will be Coca-Cola if you need some sugar and sodium.

After the ride, we'll host a BBQ on our patio, complete with adult beverages and live music that reflects the "vintage" styling of the event from the amazing Angela Perley and her band!  They'll perform two 60-minute sets, so plan to stick around for this special performance!

We'll have some terrific prizes for a variety of categories....Scratchiest Wool Jersey, for example...so use your imagination, and do your best to follow the spirit of the event.  Authenticity is key, but we won't discriminate if you join in the fun without digging deep into cycling history.  And as a bonus:  there will be PUPPIES! Because all the profits from this event will benefit Columbus Humane.  All of us at VeloScience are parents of adopted dogs or cats, and we love to promote a great cause.

Helmets are required, no matter how much they clash with your vintage gear, but we won't stop you if you wear a leather hairnet helmet from the '70s!

Pinarello Demo Day, Saturday July 18th!

Pinarello van.png

At VeloScience we're very excited to announce that we are now a dealer for Pinarello, one of the most storied bike manufacturers in the history of the sport!  If the simple fact that the last 8 Tours de France have been won on them isn't enough, come out and ride one to find out for yourself why these bikes are simply amazing!

Saturday July 18th, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm we'll be hosting the Pinarello Demo Van in the parking lot opposite our store.  We'll have a fleet of Dogma F12s for the road, and some Grevil and Dyodo gravel machines available for some fun riding.  Geoff will be leading two road rides (10:00 and 11:30) and a gravel ride at 1:30.  Please RSVP if you would like to join us on a ride, and we'll make sure to reserve a bike in your size.  Bring your current bike with you, and we will swap over your pedals and replicate your fit.  Set-up will take 15 minutes or so, so please leave ample time to prepare prior to the ride times.  We'll have restrooms and changing facilities available at the store, and you'll be able to leave your bike safely with our staff while you're out for a ride.

In addition to the test rides listed below, you may stop by anytime for a test ride on your own terms.  It's still a good idea to let us know in advance so we can make sure a bike in your size will be available.

10:00 Ride - 15 miles, mostly flat with Red Bank and Schott hills

11:30 Ride - 26 miles, mostly flat with Caswell and Edwards hills

1:30 Ride - Roughly 8 miles of pavement, dirt, and some fun stuff!

All day long we'll be providing drinks and pizza, so come hang out and enjoy the fun with us!  Our awesome Pinarello reps Peter and Jeff will have lots of cool stuff to show off, including some spectacular Pinarello builds, and certainly some drool-worthy product from the other brands they represent (SRAM, Zipp, Continental, Fizik).  We hope you can join us!

RSVP to geoff@velosciencebikeworks.com with your size and your choice of ride and bike style.

COVID-19 Updates!

BF513C3F-F1B2-47C9-B3A7-4198C22B23DD.JPG

We're grateful to Gov. DeWine's administration for allowing bicycle shops to be among the businesses considered "essential" during this stay-at-home order, and for the time being we'll be operating normally, albeit with some restrictions.  As the situation with the COVID-19 virus develops, we'll be posting updates regularly on Facebook and Instagram and www.velosciencebikeworks.com.

  • Calling ahead or e-mailing us for an appointment is highly recommended, as our status might change daily.  Additionally this will help us maintain adequately safe space between customers at all times

  • Curbside drop-off and pick-up of repairs and product is available to you.  Just call ahead, and we'll collect your order and process your bill over the phone.  Your bike or order will be parked just outside our front door when you arrive.

  • We have sanitary hand wipes just inside the front door.  Please use them immediately upon entering the store to help limit the potential of bringing the virus in with you.  If at any time you wish to wash your hands, our restroom is stocked with disinfecting soap and paper towels.

  • We're maintaining a safe distance between ourselves and others at all times, so no hugs or handshakes.

  • We're actively trying to sanitize and sterilize commonly touched surfaces.

  • We're happy to arrange test rides away from the store.  If you're considering a bike purchase, one of us can meet you at an outdoor location and help set you up for a demo ride.

  • VeloScience is here to provide the highest level of customer service possible.  If you have any specific needs or requests, we'll do our best to oblige.

We firmly believe that if everyone follows the right precautions, we can avert a lengthy and disastrous battle with this pandemic.  Please be considerate of others, first and foremost.  Take care to maintain your good health...which means GET OUTSIDE AND RIDE YOUR BIKE!

All the best,

Geoff Clark, VeloScience Bike Works

Let's continue our annual tradition of kicking off the new year with a great ride!  If it's above freezing and the roads are dry, we'll be leading a 30-mile ride from the store at 1:00 pm on January 1st.  After we finish there will be pizza and beer and cupcakes waiting at VeloScience.  Hope you can come out and join us.  And if the weather is bad?  We'll just skip to the pizza and beer part!

VeloScience is moving to a new location!

Don’t worry, we’re not going far! On Sunday June 9, we’ll be relocating to 29 S. High Street (the corner of 605 and Old 161….you’ve ridden your bike through this intersection hundreds of times!) Our new location will give us 2-1/2 times as much space, plus a great patio for outdoor hanging out before and after rides. While our spot on Market Square has been a fine place to start, we outgrew the space three years ago. The new shop will have three workbenches, a larger fit studio, ample storage, more than enough parking to host group rides, and easy and safe access to our favorite roadways out of town. We’ll be bringing back our indoor training studio under in our same location, and in the winter will offer bring-your-own-trainer spin classes. We’re excited to evolve VeloScience into a true hub for the entire cycling community.

IMG_6539.jpg

Our new location will allow us to offer much more: a wider range of accessories, more gravel bikes, more triathlon-focused inventory, and a fine sampling of mountain bikes too! Also, the Linus brand of urban cruisers will return to our sales floor.

We’ll be making the move Sunday June 9, and re-opening for business at the new location on Tuesday June 11. While our interior space is being configured, we’ll still be open for business as usual!

Summer Time Trail Series Returns!

Join us every Wednesday evening June-August for our weekly Wednesday Night Time Trial!  Our weekly speed test is a great way to gauge your fitness and get an intense threshold workout!

Meet at the Park and Ride lot on Old Worthington Road (Old 161) just east of Beech Road. First rider goes off at 7:30 pm.  At 7:25 we'll assign a starting order based on your estimate of your average speed, and start riders at 1-minute intervals.  Total distance is 8.8 miles.  The course turnaround is just before Rt. 310.  At the turnaround, you will have 1 minute to safely make a u-turn and prepare for your second leg.

Our TT series is an un-sanctioned practice race.  There is no entry fee and no prize money - just bragging rights and glory! All road bikes are welcome - not just TT bikes. Come out for the fun!  First TT of the season is Wednesday June 15!

VeloScience Time Trial Series!

Come out and test your fitness every Wednesday evening this summer!  VeloScience is hosting an informal time trial series to give you a chance to win bragging rights and a higher threshold!

Where:  Old State Route 161.  Start is at the Park-and-Ride located just east of Beech Road.  Course goes east 4.4 miles to the turnaround just before Rt.310.  8.8 miles total distance

When: Every Wednesday evening at 7:30 (June 24 through September 2).  First rider rolls at 7:30, so please be checked in by 7:15.

How:  Riders will be started at 30-second intervals.  When checking in, please give your estimated finish time so we can establish a start order.  A holder will assist you with a neutral standing start.  Because we cannot close the road at the turnaround, your time will be measured in two 4.4-mile segments, with a 1-minute delay between so you can safely make a U-turn to begin the second half.

This is an informal event, and we will not be charging any entry fees.  The series is open to all participants (kids under 18 must be accompanied by a guardian).  All first-time participants must sign a waiver of liability to be allowed to participate.  The road will be open to traffic, so the guiding rule is safety.  DO NOT pass another rider if you cannot safely do so due to traffic on the roads.  There is no victory worth risking the lives of yourself and others.  Drafting is illegal, and good sportsmanship is mandatory!

This TT should be great preparation for triathletes and time-trial specialists alike, or for anyone hoping to satisfy their need for competition.  Come join us for the fun!
